Uncle Joe Hikes
United States
Приєднався 8 гру 2006
Do you like to hike? I love getting into the backcountry to hike! I present my hikes on this channel as a way of giving viewers some idea of what a particular trail is like in terms of difficulty, aesthetic beauty, flora, and sometimes fauna. And I'd like to think I make it a little fun along the way.
Not into hiking? Into sleeping? You might find you get better sleep watching my videos! Ask your doctor is watching Uncle Joe Hikes is right for you!

Buckeye Knob to Coosa Bald Summit!
I went up to the mountains for some camping and a hike. The rain made for a soggy trip and I eventually decided to just camp up at Mulky Campground so I'd have a gravel pad to mitigate the wash. The storms broke up the first night and I even got a few fireflies, as seen in the last clip. The next morning I headed up the Duncan Ridge Trail to Coosa Bald. Hiking from the West like this would probably be better in the fall as the closer I got to the bald the thicker the overgrowth got.

Chattooga River Trail to Licklog Creek!

Muggy day hiking on the Chattooga River Trail from Sandy Ford down to Licklog Creek! Not a long hike but being warm and humid made it rough. Some flowers and blackberries made it much nicer, though. I took the Smith Creek Trail out to Anna Ruby Falls. I even saw a bear! It was a bit muggy but a nice hike. It did take a bit out of me perhaps due to the heat bubble the country is in right now. Benton MacKaye Storm Damage and the Ball Mountain Loop
Переглядів 92Місяць тому
The last time I did the the short Ball Mountain Loop it was pretty socked in. I thought I'd head up and do it again and check out the Owen Overlook, which happens to be where my intro pic was taken. I ended up adding a 1.5mi loop when I came across some storm damage! Hats off to trail workers who cleared that debris! Flat Creek Loop Hike!
Переглядів 146Місяць тому
This week I headed up to the community of Aska and hiked the Flat Creek Loop! There are no huge payoffs on this trail but it is a nice trail with a mild gradient on a side slope and a lush creek bottom. I did this counter-clockwise which meant I had some relatively steep climbing out of the creek. So I’d recommend a clockwise hike for this trail if you want a more gradual hike. Intro music cred...
Panther Creek Trail to the Falls!
Переглядів 145Місяць тому
The last time I hiked the Panther Creek Trail to the falls the bridge was still intact. So it’s been awhile. Trailhead parking was at a premium, of course, and there was no shortage of people on the trail. Don’t miss the makeshift crossing just prior to the old bridge location or you’ll get your feet wet like me and those that I followed across. Intro music credit: Solo Acoustic Guitar by Jason...
Pinhoti Trail Terminus Loop!
Переглядів 1392 місяці тому
I headed up to the Cohutta for my birthday weekend and camped at Jacks River Fields. I had wanted to take the South Fork Trail and part of the Benton MacKaye up to the northern terminus of the Pinhoti then work sobo on that trail and back to the campsite as a loop. I met a fellow at the campground who was interested in hiking so he and I headed out on the roughly 7mi loop. Beautiful weekend and...
Hiking to Tray Mountain Summit
Переглядів 1372 місяці тому
This was a rather short hike but a good workout of a climb on the AT up to Tray Mountain Summit! I was hoping to beat the threatening rain as the forecast was for dry weather most of the day. I've been adjusting my diet in an effort to shed some pounds and I think maybe my blood sugar was suffering. I was feeling a little drained for much of this hike but the hike down was fine and gave me a ch...
Summiting Rabun Bald from the East!
Переглядів 1343 місяці тому
I hiked up #RabunBald from the East again, taking the trail off Hale Ridge Rd. I'd forgotten how tough this hike is. This trail has been called the #ThreeForksTrail, as a continuation of that same trail to the East further back on Hale Ridge Road. That would seem a misplaced name give how far from that trail this is. I’ve also seen it called simply the #RabunBaldTrail. My last attempt on this t...
Len Foote Hike Inn Trail and Loop!

Me and my buddy Don headed up the Hike Inn Trail and looped back on the Approach Trail of the Appalachian Trail! Don hadn't been to the Len Foote Hike Inn and wanted to do a hike so this seemed like a good choice. We're already thinking of making a reservation and bringing some friends for a stay. Slaughter Creek and Jarrard Gap Loop Hike
Переглядів 1293 місяці тому
Sometimes you need some miles on a beautiful Spring day! I headed up to Lake Winfield Scott and took the Slaughter Creek Trail up to the Appalachian Trail. I headed south on the AT to Jarrard Gap and back to Ol' Gobi for a nice loop. The stop in at Woods Hole Shelter added some mileage with a 6.5mi total. Spring is moving up the mountains as evidenced by the small ground flowers that are starti...

The Tiny But Peaceful Cooper Creek Trail!
That nobby tree looked unique.
That looks like a really great trail! Certainly a great day out there enjoying the forest😁
Very lush and temps weren't too bad. I just wish I had beaten the rain!
Lovely work man, forest looks and sounds so enjoyable and enchanting! Love it 👏
Thanks! definitely lots of green right now.
Thanks once again for the mention. I bet that's a decent view up there when it a clear day plus no leaves on the trees. Nice little shower you got.I'm glad you didn't get your silly putty stolen. Nice hike Joe!
Thanks! Yeah I always seem to be up there when it's cloudy!
👍🏼👍🏼
👍
How is the road to Sandy Ford? I haven't been in there in years.
It was fine. They've actually paved it all the way back to the little cattle farm. The rest of the way was well maintained as well all the way to the parking area by the river.
@UncleJoeHikes Dang! Warwoman is moving on up since I was a kid! 🤣
@@scotttakesahike 😆 Uptown, high-rent!
Good conversation. OMG! I can't believe you stacked those three rocks on that log! How dare you😂 I can see the problem with cairns if everyone builds their own on the trails and it causes people to get lost or confused. I think they need to be strategic. I was helped by a cairn when hiking years ago in Australia. The trail was hard to see and then I spotted the cairn someone had placed and did some investigation and saw that it indeed was the trail I was supposed to take. If i were to bet, I would think the cairn was placed by a fellow hiker on the trail and was not placed by parks workers. I was grateful for that cairn that day. I think fire rings, in areas that are frequently camped, are a good thing. Let's just have one that everyone uses rather than people creating their own all the time. It stops people from moving rocks all the time to make them in those areas. It lessens the disturbance to the environment. Just don't leave garbage or any other garbage in the fire ring when you leave. Lets drop the illusion that we're the first person there. Now if you are in the backcountry and somewhere remote, then I can see removing the ring and burying the left over coals so it looks like no one was ever there. I think instead of castigating someone for something they did on the trail, why not chat to them about it and explain why you think another way may be better. Too many people hide behind keyboards and throw insults instead.
Nice Jeep you have! You like a really great trail! It's nice to hear the creek flowing as you go. I enjoyed this one😁
Thanks for watching!
Hey Uncle Joe. Have you ran into any snakes on the trail this summer?
@@FreeBirdUSA I really haven’t seen a lot out this Summer. This heat wave may be keeping them still during the day.
Nice video, Joe. Yeah, it's combination of heat and humidity has been... difficult. If Gobi needs a bath, crossing Warwoman creek on Earl's Ford road a mile or so north of this hike is a popular Jeep route. This time of year the Bartram trail is really overgrown. I do like it though as it indicates fewer travelers.
@@KENFEDOR22 Yeah I’ve crossed Warwoman before but I don’t think I’ve taken Gobi across yet.
Looks like great campsites along the trail. Another great video my friend! Have an awesome weekend.
@@JimHayesHiking Yeah I might have to go back to that one someday! Have a good one, Jim!
campspot looked like a great place to hang a hammock and relax for a while.
Yeah would be nice along that river!
I think most of those dead and dying evergreens are hemlocks. They've been all but wiped out all along to Chattooga and the slopes above it. You have to really be careful these days where you pitch your tent in there. Don't want to get killt by falling limbs and tree trunks.
Yeah it's sad to see. Hopefully what is left will be heartier and make it!
Such a lovely work, another gorgeous and so atmospheric trail. Forest looks so enchanting!
The jungles of the Chattooga!
Nice footage!
I saw you and Gobi headed north through Rabun County as I was heading back from Maggie Valley yesterday. I said to myself, I wonder where Uncle Joe is headed? 😂
Cool! Yeah headed up to Sandy Ford!
@8:19 I was petrified. lol. I am trying to overcome my fear of bears....slowly. lol. So glad all is well, and you got to witness that. Safe travels. ☺
Thankfully he was far enough away I could prepare should have gone south!
@@UncleJoeHikes So cool you got that on camera. Thanks! ☺
I've had a few bear encounters over the years but was never able to get any of them on film. Nice waterfalls! Nicely done Joe!
Glad you finally got to see a bear. 🤘
Thanks!
the importance is to remain calm which is what you did! I had a bear encounter in the middle of the night in the Green Swamp in Florida. I crawled out of my tent and threw some tinder to fuel the mellow fire at 2 am and I started banging on the fire ring while it circled me in the saw palmettos it growled and clicked it's jaws but eventually it left when I started singing Led Zeppelin's Immigrant song..true story ...ever since I am always bear aware carry my bear spray with me all the time now...the secret to surviving is not show fear if you show fear the animals look at it as weakness...always remember we are at the top of the food chain.
Wow! I bet that was intense! Given the proximity to the campground bear spray was probably in order. I wasn't unprotected, though, but luckily this was a positive experience for me, at least.
Oh my! 👀 Glad you are ok. ☺
Did you try to hug the bear and give it honey?
😂 That is a problem with bears. They kinda look like they want a hug!
The older I get (56), the more I realize the importance of hydration as well as electrolytes. I drank 2.5 liters on a 11 mile mountain run/hike last weekend (Rabun Bald/Bartram Trail) and ran out 8 miles in. Had to use some of my buddy's supply. Not to be preachy, but please don't underestimate our need for hydration!
Yeah I've started carrying electrolytes. Now if I can remember to use them! What happened to us, Man? We used to play outside in the 90's like it was nothing!
Hmm, the fact that the bear knew your name tells me your subscriber and view numbers are deceivingly low. 🤪 Glad your encounter was benign, I'm hoping for a similar one up there.
😂 He probably looked at me like that sabertooth on Ice Age and thought, "Meh, I don't eat junk food!"
This looks really great man, absolutely gorgeous natural beauty and it's good that the bear didn't see you as a meal! 🥘 😂
Yeah thank goodness he was digging for bear food!
Looks like a young bear.
Yeah he wasn’t terribly big.
Boy that one small area sure did take a licking. Pretty decent views, very nice loop Joe!
Thanks! Yeah that Owen Lookout is a nice, intimate place. Well, until the ladies showed up! lol I let them enjoy it.
Wow! The woods were so peaceful.
Another lovely hike man, such a enchanting and wonderful forest! Love it
Thanks!
I'm planning to thru hike the Florida, Pinhoti, and Benton Mackaye sometime in the next 5 years
Oh cool!
Hey Uncle Joe, better watch out for them ole moonshiners up in them there mountains. 😂
:p But they're "direct-to-public!"
Your video as usual was outstanding. It came out at a great time too. I always look forward to your videos but this one was special. I fell 20 odd feet this past Thursday and my hiking for this year is pretty much done as I broke my leg and back. You have become my eyes on the trail now so hope you have more coming soon.
Oh wow! So sorry about your injuries! Heal well and heal fast! Thanks for watching and commenting. I'll do my best to keep them coming!
Lovely video man, such a enchanting forest scenery!
Thanks!
beautiful place to hike!
That was a dang good looking loop Joe! Thanks for the shout-out my friend!
YW! Short but sweet loop!
Nice video. Thanks for sharing. 👍2
Thanks for watching!
I believe them pesky elves are messing with us. One of these days they're gonna show themselves to one of us! Awesome hike my friend!
Thanks! Yeah they’re always on the move, it seams.
Beautiful video. Thanks for sharing. 👍4
Thanks for watching!
when you heard the music, I was thinking to myself "I hope it's not a banjo" :) Great video.
🤣
Great trail Uncle Joe! I’ve hiked and camped it many times. It’s fairly easy hiking to the falls with a gradual down hill. It kicked my butt coming back. HA!
Yeah there's something about that trail that kinda wears you out. Funny how you can come off that trail and feel like you hiked something with more elevation.
Absolutely gorgeous work, soothing and simply enjoyable work man!
Thanks!
Hi! How much time it takes you to reach Bly gap and came back to the Blue Ridge Gap point? Just as a reference :) I'm planning to do it by August. Thanks!
That's a good question. I don't recall exactly and having a group would certainly impact that time. It's about 3mi each way so probably 4 hours with good break is probably what to expect. It's about an 800' climb up over that 3mi so not bad. You gotta get pics at the iconic tree!
Nice loop hike. Really green out there. Definitely stay out of Alabama 😂😂
Generally good advice!
Sorry. Not going down any trail called Terminus.
lol It does sound ominous! It's just the Pinhoti's dead end. Which admittedly doesn't sound better.
Well,I'm glad you got some nice hiking weather we're still getting rain here. Man that was a big ole pile of Millipede scat! LOL! Nice hike Joe.
lol No the millipede was sitting on it or eating it. I didn't know they would do that. Maybe he just came upon it and didn't want to go around!
@@UncleJoeHikesyeah I knew he didn't deposit it,but I have seen them on scat before.
@@JimHayesHiking Well I figured you did and were pulling my leg. I'd hate to run into the millipede that could drop that much scat, though! :o
Did you say EARLY!?
